‘Clarke and Hassleman were at dinner together?’ Wise said in near disbelief. ‘You’re joking.’

Hannah smiled. ‘On the fourteenth of last month. The night Hassleman took an Uber somewhere.’

‘It was organised by a think tank,’ Sarah added. ‘The European Economics Agenda.’

‘Not only that,’ Hannah said, her eyes shining bright with excitement. ‘They were on the same table together and Hassleman proceeded to get off his tits, pissing Clarke off.’

‘You haven’t told him the best bit,’ Sarah said.

Wise looked from one to the other. ‘What best bit?’

Now Hannah grinned. ‘The wanker was with them.’

‘David Smythe?’ Wise said.

‘Bingo,’ Sarah said.

‘He lied to us,’ Hannah said. ‘He bloody lied to us.’

The three of them were alone in MIR-One, a half-eaten pizza on the table between them. Everyone else had called it a night.

‘Now, why would he do that?’ Wise said. No wonder they were excited.

‘Because he didn’t want us to know there was a link between them,’ Hannah said.

‘What about Andronovitch?’

‘Sabine had no record of Harry meeting him, but she didn’t know who else was at the dinner,’ Hannah said. ‘She gave us the organizer’s name, though. Terrence Swift.’

‘Good work. Let’s go see him first thing in the morning.’

‘She also said Clarke wanted Smythe to resign for the PPE screw-up and that he was going to give all the profit Smythe had made to charity.’

‘But now Clarke’s dead, he gets control of the company instead,’ Wise said. ‘That’s a damn good motive if ever there was one.’

‘We thought that, too. But why kill the others?’ Hannah said. ‘He gains nothing from Hassleman and Andronovitch’s death.’

‘I know,’ Wise said, ‘but we have a link at last between two of the victims — this dinner. Maybe there’s someone else there that they were all doing business with. Someone else Smythe was tied up with.’

‘I looked up the event on social media,’ Hannah said, ‘but there’s nothing from any of the guests and nothing on the museum’s own feeds.’

‘That’s interesting,’ Wise said. ‘I would’ve thought there’d be loads of posts up from guests at such a swanky affair.’

‘Not this one, Guv,’ Hannah replied. ‘It’s as if it didn’t happen.’

‘We also asked about Clarke’s schedule,’ Sarah said.

‘And?’ Wise asked.

‘Only Smythe, his wife, the driver, the cleaner, and Sabine knew when he was coming back,’ Sarah said.

‘Let’s look at the driver and the cleaner some more,’ Wise said. ‘Maybe they sold the information to someone or got chatty down the pub with the wrong person.’

‘I’ll get Jono and Hicksy on that first thing in the morning,’ Sarah said.

‘Thank you.’ Wise looked over at the whiteboards. There was almost too much information up there now — and none of it connecting apart from Hassleman and Clarke attending the same dinner and Smythe lying about it.

He pulled out his phone and looked up Samson’s number, aware that it was 10 p.m. on a Sunday night. He dialed anyway. If he was right, another murder was going to happen in approximately twenty-four hours. Bothering someone late at night on the weekend didn’t matter compared to that.
